It started On November 8th 2016 with a series of text messages

November marks one year of 500 Women Scientists. Celebrate with us and remember where we came from...

Most of us can remember November 8th 2016, the feeling of panic as election results started coming in from the Midwest and the chances of electing the first female president of the US slipped away.

Four friends from graduate school were frantically sending text messages expressing disbelief and as the night progressed, outrage. In the next 2 days, an idea began to take shape. We would write a letter, reaffirming our commitment to stand with our fellow women scientists, to push against the anti-science and anti-knowledge sentiments taking root across the US and world, and to fight the misogyny and discrimination that is rampant in our own scientific institutions.

With women scientists from our own network, we crafted an open pledge, published it in the Scientific American, and gathered signatures from supporters in and outside of science.

We hoped for 500 signatures, but our message resonated with women not just in the US but across the world, and signatures poured in.

From a pledge to an organization

In just one year, we have made incredible progress towards building an unapologetically feminist organization that values all scientists, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, faith, or country of origin. We have given women a voice and platform to advocate for change, both in our own scientific institutions and in society. We marched collectively for science, for women, for climate action, and for social justice. We have published strong statement after strong statement, in Op-Eds and blog posts, to defend science, women's voices, and truth. Together, we launched local pods all over the world.

We are building a truly global movement of women voices.

One year in... We marched, we organized

THE MISSION OF 500 WOMEN SCIENTISTS IS TO SERVE SOCIETY BY MAKING SCIENCE OPEN, INCLUSIVE, AND ACCESSIBLE

THE VISION OF 500 WOMEN SCIENTISTS IS TO BE THE FOREMOST ORGANIZATION FOR THE TRANSFORMATION OF LEADERSHIP, DIVERSITY, AND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT IN SCIENCE

We gathered >20,000 signatories of our pledge

164 pods formed all over the world to bring women scientists together in their communities and strike teams formed to push our organization to make progress on issues integral to our mission and vision.

We officially launched our organization.

We marched for women, for science, for social justice, for climate.

We launched several campaigns: #ourEPA, #FundUSAScience, Summer of Op-Eds, and End Harassment.

We published articles defending women's only spaces, stepping up to fight climate change as agents of change, speaking up for environmental protections, advocating for science, pushing President Trump and elected officials in charge of the US DOE and EPA to protect scientific integrity, and calling for European women in science to unite

Every week, we took action, we met an incredible woman scientist, we introduced new pods, and we wrapped up.

As we look back on the achievement and growth of the past year and as we plan for the year to come, we ask you to take some time this November to celebrate how far we have come and reflect on where you want this organization to go. Take a day or a weekend to celebrate your achievements as an individual, as a woman, as a scientist, or as a 500 Women Scientists pod. Lets all recommit ourselves to our shared values and goals. Here are some ideas for things that you and/or your pod can do to celebrate our 1 year anniversary:

  • Take stock of where you are today and what we have been able to make progress on over the past year - raise a glass to celebrate what you have achieved!

  • Get your pod together

    • Host a Story Slam with your pod to share your achievements and your aspirations for the year ahead with your community. The Story Collider has generously provided tips on storytelling for our one-year anniversary celebration!

    • Revisit your mission and goals

  • Do a fun thing! Retaining our capacity for joy is resistance in itself!

  • Support a woman-owned business in your area, individually or as a pod

  • If you can, VOTE!

  • Change the world!

CELEBRATE WITH US

The 500 Women Scientists leadership and advisory board will hold our second in-person meeting in Washington DC on November 4-5 to develop a strategic vision for the next year and celebrate our 1 year anniversary. If you are in the Washington DC area, please join us!
