DEIJ Leadership + Pod Training Series

The purpose of this series is to train our leadership team members, coordinators and members of our local chapters (Pods) to gain knowledge of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) history and principles. DEIJ training will help foster a culture of formal and informal learning and embed those principles in our work. Participants will strengthen skills for managing conflict, addressing uncomfortable topics, and balancing the social justice/equity elements in conversations.

Open to all Leadership Team and North American Pod members, this DEIJ Training Series includes 6 Educational Streams over 6 months featuring multi-media content units and monthly live workshops.

This DEIJ training will be an iterative process, we will be designing and delivering content tailored to our international pods in 2023.

Concurrent DEIJ Initiatives:

  • We write Take Actions as it relates to various DEI topics i.e. BLM, Stop Asian Hate, Women’s Rights and so forth; the associated actions are optional and are released publicly.

  • 500WS partnered with Science Friday to host The Breakthrough Festival: Celebration of Women in STEM; this event was optional and open to the public.

  • Updating Request a Woman in STEMM platform to Gage. The name change was necessary to not only include women but also gender diverse folks. This name change was mandatory.

  • Formation of the Black Women’s Collective. We are still working on developing the structure for this initiative. Once we have secured funding, we will share this initiative with our pods.

  • Development of the Fix the Gap Survey, which aims to crowd-source speaking fees and honoraria received by scientists for speaking engagements, across different STEMM disciplines, career stages, geographies and context. Participation was optional and anonymous and open to the public.

  • Selected our second cohort for the Fellowship for the Future initiative which recognizes and amplifies the critical role of women of color in STEMM. Our fellows were not previously members of our organization. Fellows attend quarterly workshops that are hosted by WoC and give certain skill sets with the centering and uplifting of DEI.

  • We host Bi-Annual leadership meetings where a facilitator usually walks the LT through numerous DEI exercises. Topics and focus vary by meeting. These are not open to pod members unless they’re hosting.
