Another week and another shooting in the US. Thoughts and prayers do little in the wake of such horror. If you want to take action, there are some suggestions in a previous post of ours here, and five direct ways to help. We are grateful for the strong group we have and if you have suggestions for how our community can contribute to the mess of American gun laws, please reach out to us. A big hug to all of you!

Friends, we cannot thank you enough for the support you have given 500 Women Scientists over the last year! We relied on our community for strength, encouragement, ideas, and passion to keep up the fight, even when every day brought a new assault on the values we hold dear. We have big plans for 2018 and we hope you will be there with us!
We are taking the next two weeks off, but will be back to our regular schedule beginning January 8th. Sending well wishes to all of you for the holidays!
Weekly Wrap-Up
Many of us are ending the year at conferences - AGU, BES, ECRS to name a few. In light of our recent piece in Scientific American on sexual harassment, now is good time to think about how we can help implement institutional change. Read the article to find concrete actions, and share your own ideas with us too! It starts with asking scientific societies and instituions to make changes, so lets get asking. Have a good weekend all.
Weekly Wrap-Up
It is easy to be angry: at the now thousands of stories of sexual misconduct in academics, at heartless tax cuts that will directly effect grad students, and at events we have very little control over - this week the fires in California. This weekend I encourage you all to take time for yourself - because it is easy to be angry but we cannot continue to react and take action if we are tired and worn down. I we are sure keeping busy! Big hug friends.
Weekly Wrap-Up
If the holiday season doesn't stress you out, than the proposed US tax plan that will directly impact graduate students probably will. So if you need to relax and take a break, I recommend listening to the ELT podcast. If you have energy to take action, check out our resource page - maybe write an Op-Ed or ask your friends and family to give the gift of science this season. And if you have new ideas, share them with us (we obsessively check our email and tweets). Happy December friends!

We have big plans for 2018, and we want you all involved. Make sure you 1. Sign up for our monthly Newsletter, 2. Join or start a pod, and 3. Stay up to date by regularly checking our website, twitter and facebook. Enjoy the weekend!
Weekly Wrap-Up
On November 4-5, we held our second board meeting in Washington DC and celebrated one year of 500 Women Scientists. The goal of our meeting was to identify how to actualize our mission in 2018, ensure all aspects of our organization are inclusive, and better organize ourselves to be sustainable through many more years. This will require input from all of us- leaders, advisors, pods and members. So if you want to take action, form a pod, if you have a pod, go to a meeting, and if you want more contact us!

Happy November friends. We are so excited to reclaim the month with you. And we start with our 1 year celebration this weekend! Gather together with your pods and celebrate 1 year of 500 WOmen Scientists. If you happen to be in DC, please join us!
Weekly Wrap Up
Over the last week, the March for Science received a new flurry of media attention, sparked by an open letter from MfS volunteers. If you aren’t familiar with what is happening, you can read the full story in The Atlantic, The Washington Post, and Gizmodo’s Earther. Before the March, 500 Women Scientists dissolved our partnership because we no longer saw our mission aligning with that of the MfS, though we still marched last April. Our mission remains plain, simple, and ambitious — to serve society by making science open, inclusive, and accessible. One year after our launch, we remain committed to fulfilling that mission, to remake science into an enterprise for all. Our membership is central to fulfilling that vision. So with that in mind, here’s our week in review!

Every day of every week brings a new challenge. Our hearts are broken after the senseless terror attack in Las Vegas on Monday. And today, we are enraged by the renewed attack on women's reproductive rights. Sometimes it feels like the fight is coming from all sides. And we must continue to fight. If you need support this week, we encourage you to reach out to your pod. We have created our network for this very reason - for support and strength. Together, we are stronger.
