A Pod is a local chapter of 500 Women Scientists. The term “Pod” is an ode to whale pods which signify to us the power of effective teamwork and collaboration - the spirit in which we aim to enact change! Pods are such a vital part of our organization and what allow us to truly be grassroots and to prioritize the needs of our local communities around the world.
We currently have 500+ pods based in specific geographic locations along with one remote pod that meets virtually. Pods are open to the community and are not associated with a particular scientific institution, university or other organization. We see this to be vital to not only serving our communities, but also gives us the freedom to be advocates for holding others accountable.
Pods are open to any women and gender minorities who support the mission and goals of 500 Women Scientists. We believe and understand that gender is fluid and can be difficult to define. We built this movement specifically for people who have been historically marginalized in the fields of STEMM due to their gender identity and expression. This includes (but is not limited to) women, gender nonbinary, genderqueer, transgender, agender, and bigender folks. Members self-identify their gender identity and we aim to make our organization, and furthermore our Pods, a safe space and encourage members to only share as much information about their identities that they feel safe and comfortable with doing so.
To start a Pod, you must be 18 years of age or older. In the meantime, we absolutely want to help connect young women and gender minorities who are interested in STEM, equity and justice with each other and with potential mentors. You are of course welcome to start a school club and use all the resources we provide on our website and social media to help guide your activities. You are also welcome to engage with your local 500 Women Scientist Pod.
