Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday! This week, we are really excited to launch our summer writing campaign. This summer, get together with your pods or other scientists in your community and write a letter to the editor or OpEd on a topic that resonates with you and your community. Send letters to your local newspapers, national news outlets, or publish on our Medium page. We can't wait to see what you all come up with!

What we've done

  • Summer of OpEds on a topic that is near and dear to our hearts - science!
  • We are seeking social scientists to help us develop and inform an ambitious science outreach project. If you are  interested in science outreach, especially to underserved and rural areas, get in touch!

  • Next week in NYC - Women in STEMfest
  • Meet Emily, a leader of 500WS and an expert at balancing life.

What we like

Take Action Tuesday

#weekly_action

We call on your scientific expertise again this week.

Submit a comment on the proposed National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program (National OCS Program) for 2019-2022 https://www.regulations.gov/document?D=BOEM-2017-0050-0001. Find more info and a sample comment at 500 WS website

2) We are inspired by local government for their commitments to the Paris agreement, including the CO Governor. Consider sharing your thoughts on climate commitments with your local government. Will they sign on with other cities, states, businesses? http://www.denverpost.com/2017/07/11/colorado-signs-us-climate-alliance-joining-states-committed-paris-climate-agreement/

Meditating on Science in Public Policy

This week on #meetascientist, we get to know Philo Mbong. A virologist by training, Philo left Academia to bring science into the world of public policy. She shares how she found her way into science with her interest in reproductive health and how she manages to ground herself through all her science policy and advocacy activities (spoiler: she's a master of yoga).
