A mentor is someone with relevant expertise who provides guidance and support with regard for the mentee’s personal goals and identities. Establishing effective mentoring within and among pods is important for building relationships that can help individuals gain confidence, pods to be active in their communities, and the 500WS organization function as an effective community of women scientists and allies advocating for our membership and women in STEMM around the world.
The Pods Mentoring Program is designed to help new pod coordinators gain confidence in their understanding of how the organization works, how to run a pod, and feel supported. Pod coordinators may request to participate in the program and a member of the Leadership Team will match new pod coordinators with a mentor, anyone who has experience participating in or leading a pod and is familiar with the organization. Besides making these connections among pods, the program offers some basic structure to encourage accountability for completing a monthly meeting between mentor and mentee for a minimum of three months.
The program started in January 2020 and is currently in Phase 1 which is for US Pods. Our volunteer Pod Mentorship Committee composed of leadership team members and pod coordinators will be working on Phase 2 for international pods starting in June 2020.
