Or are you cultivating understanding of how one can develop & offer unique contributions to fulfill personal goals AND enrich the communities in which one lives & operates.

Mónica started her career as a neuroscientist, leaving the bench for an established career in science communication and outreach. Friends, we cannot thank you enough for the support you have given 500 Women Scientists over the last year! We relied on our community for strength, encouragement, ideas, and passion to keep up the fight, even when every day brought a new assault on the values we hold dear. We have big plans for 2018 and we hope you will be there with us!

Our federal science agencies are world class and critical to our nation’s health and safety, yet this week the CDC was given a list of banned words. Neither the science nor its budgets should be censored. Help us speak up against the ban of 7 words in the CDC budget:
Many of us are ending the year at conferences - AGU, BES, ECRS to name a few. In light of our recent piece in Scientific American on sexual harassment, now is good time to think about how we can help implement institutional change. Read the article to find concrete actions, and share your own ideas with us too! It starts with asking scientific societies and instituions to make changes, so lets get asking. Net Neutrality is critical to science. Data traveling through a network equally, regardless of the source, destination, or content of that data is important for the progress and democratization of science. We encourage you to speak up for Net Neutrality this week (and have even shared some text for you to send)!
This week on #MeetAScientist, get to know paleontologist and podcast producer Michelle Barboza-Ramirez. We're big fans of her podcast, the Femmes of STEM, where she combines her expertise in science and women's studies to bring us bi-weekly episodes of the women who have propelled science, technology, engineering, and mathematics forward. In this interview, she shares how the podcast came to be, as well as how she found her own way into science.
It is easy to be angry: at the now thousands of stories of sexual misconduct in academics, at heartless tax cuts that will directly effect grad students, and at events we have very little control over - this week the fires in California. This weekend I encourage you all to take time for yourself - because it is easy to be angry but we cannot continue to react and take action if we are tired and worn down. I we are sure keeping busy! She discusses her research into grackles and what they can tell us about human behavior and shares how she has used evidence to craft best practices for her research group.
