Another week and another shooting in the US. Thoughts and prayers do little in the wake of such horror. If you want to take action, there are some suggestions in a previous post of ours here, and five direct ways to help. We are grateful for the strong group we have and if you have suggestions for how our community can contribute to the mess of American gun laws, please reach out to us. A big hug to all of you!
All Black History Month we are taking action to show our support for women of color in STEM. Last week we shared a number of resources. This week we have 3 simple actions you can take.
“Every day, you are doing something that contributes to the group, but you may not realize it. Every young woman you mentor, every collaboration you develop with another scientist, every time you push against the norms to challenge others to do the same-- you’re doing work for us.” -Janelle, the Ithaca pod coordinator.

There is a massive gender imbalance in the sciences. In jobs and promotions, in publications, in grants received and in invited presentations, women are unacceptably underrepresented. Gender imbalance is only one axis of underrepresentation, the scientific careers of underrepresented minorities, especially women of color, are more severely harmed by this imbalance. Creating balanced science requires effort, diligence, and acknowledgement when the system is not working. As this week’s action we are preparing to hold individuals, scientific societies, conferences and institutions accountable.
Wow, if January is an indicator, 2018 sure is going to be awesome. We launched Request a Woman Scientist and have received a flood of interest. Plus, over 20 pods joined in the last month. Beth talks about how she combined her passion for geoscience with her love of language to become Outreach Specialist at UNAVCO supporting earth science around the globe.

Beronda Montgomery of our advisory board asks you to consider: Are you #mentoring individuals to 'perform' a job, a life, a role? Or are you cultivating understanding of how one can develop & offer unique contributions to fulfill personal goals AND enrich the communities in which one lives & operates.

Mónica started her career as a neuroscientist, leaving the bench for an established career in science communication and outreach.
