Last weekend many from our organization marched - in a women’s march, on #MLK day and for #indigenouspeoplesmarch. We love to see you all out there standing up for social justice and taking steps towards breaking down a system that truly only supports on a few and holds back most. We know alone, marching will not bring change, but it does bring us together, helps build our network, and makes us stronger when we return home to enact the necessary changes - to make science more open, inclusive, and accessible. Thank you everyone for what you do. Enjoy your well earned weekend!

Many of our members and pods will join the Women’s March this Saturday in Washington, DC and around the world. We address the recent controversies and lay out our reasons for marching this Saturday. Marching is the beginning, it is not the end. Every day, we work together to make a better world.

Hey friends, how are you doing this week? How is your #selfcare routine? Are you exercising? Making time for your own thoughts? Making time away from your computer to be with your friends and family? Maybe a goal for the weekend? Sunday I have 4 conference calls so on Saturday I am leaving my computer and phone and home and plan to get time outside! I also plan to take a nap, I can’t wait! Big hug and see you next week.

Happy New Year! 2018 was awesome, and honestly we can’t wait to see what 2019 brings. I started my year off by listening to the latest episode of the Nod, on setting your intentions for the year. I love the connotation of ‘intention’ because it allows for and encourages assessment and reflection at the end of the year - more so than ‘goals’ or ‘resolutions.’ What do you think? Do you set intentions? Make resolutions? Or do you have another tradition for starting out a new year?

We were thrilled to see so many women elected this week (116!). With those victories came so many firsts across states and districts- first Native American women, first black women , first muslim women, first LGBTQ, the list goes on. Still, our work does not start or end with one political defeat or victory, and we know that this is only one step. You all, our community, and the women elected this week inspire us to keep working for change. Enjoy the weekend friends.

With regard to social justice, October did not go well. We have been busy pushing back, and meanwhile let’s use today - Dia de las Muertos - to mark a new day and refresh our energy. As Dr Zuleyka Zevallos, an applied sociologist highlights in her blog “ ‘The concept of resistance is an important cultural/ political aspect of Día de los Muertos.’” She suggests watching this film to better grasp this holiday based on post-colonialsim and celebrating life. Just 4 more days until we vote in the USA. #GOTV!

Tomorrow the Tucson pod is helping us host our 4th board meeting. Every 6 months we meet with our leadership and advisory board members, assess our progress from the last year and identity plans for the upcoming year. Because almost all our communication happens via conference calls, slack, and emails, this is a special opportunity for the board to meet face to face. These meetings and our progress in the last 2 years would not be possible without the generous donations of our supporters and subscribers, so thank you!

This last week we have been focusing our effort on amplifying the awesome work of our #sistersinSTEM. If you haven’t yet, check out #MeTooSTEM and consider donating to their efforts. At the same time, Science-a-Thon is in full swing; follow the #DayofScience hashtag to see what everyone is up to. Let us know what else you are up to, we love getting your messages! Enjoy the weekend.

I’m really wishing I was at the @SACNAS conference right now, they are having all the fun and celebrating 45 years! This week felt like we had some wins, or at least that progress was being made. I may have got carried away with the links, but there was so much good stuff to share. Find out what you might have missed or just reread the highs of the week. Happy Friday friends.

I can’t decide about this week.. on the one hand I (probably like many of you) spent a bit of time screaming at the internet about the sexism and misogyny that is deeply rooted in society. On the other hand, women were awarded the noble prize both in physics AND chemistry! If, like me, you aren’t sure where to put your energy, here are some ideas: sign up for the Science-a-Thon, join Black Fridays, or become a 500WS subscriber.
