Weekly Wrap-Up

Weekly Wrap-Up

Since our open letter was published in November 2016, we have grown to >19,000 strong (women and supporters). In the last 5 months, we organized, we marched, we started pods, we formed strike teams, and we continue to grow our incredible network of women scientists all over the world. Have you subscribed to our newsletter? Sign the pledge and keep informed!

Pod of the Week - Boulder

Pod of the Week - Boulder

Today we are excited to get to introduce the Boulder Pod. Boulder may be in the center of a scientific bubble, but the Boulder women have still felt the need for a strong network of women scientists. They have been quite active over the last few months, from the science march last week (with Trivia!), to organizing a social media seminar, and have many outreach activities planned!

Weekly Wrap-Up

This weekend, 500 Women Scientists around the world will march for science. We see no conflict in simultaneously marching for science and advocating for women, for marginalized groups, and for equality. Read more about our stance on the March for Science in our latest Medium post. Then catch up on what else we've accomplished this week!

What we've done

  • In preparation for the March for Science, we have posters, coloring books, and even snapchat directions - catch up on our MFS resource page

  • Pods (and some girl scouts) around the world have been making their March signs, share yours with us!

  • On Monday, we met Dr. Rana Dajani, she is an amazing leader and we are proud to have her as part of team!

  • If you haven't yet, please donate to our joint fundraiser with the Cairn Project, support girls in science and the outdoors.

  • 500WS in the Huffington Post

What we like

Pod of the Week: NOLA

Pod of the Week: NOLA

We first met Claire Borges back in January, when she reached out to 500WS asking how she could be more involved. Since then she has become an active member of our organization, is leading the young scientist strike team and has helped set up a Pod in New Orleans. Now, the NOLA pod is up and running and taking action of their own. Find out what they are up to and if you are Marching in New Orleans this weekend, look for Claire giving a speech. Thanks NOLA for the interview!

Science, education, and women in the Arab World... and beyond

Science, education, and women in the Arab World... and beyond

Dr. Rana Dajani is a higher education reform expert and a member of the UN Women Jordan advisory council.  She frequently writes in the journal Nature about science, education and women in the Arab World and in 2014, she received a PEER award to establish a network for women mentors. Today on #meetascientist, we got to talk to Rana about the amazing programs she is working on.

Science, an Evolving Passion

Science, an Evolving Passion

Today on #meetascientist I am so happy to introduce Samantha Weintraub. Sam is one of those enviable scientists who has been able to conduct some of her research in the tropics, and later in the mountains of Utah (on skies!). Today Sm talks about how to embrace the evolution of your research, how to draw on your surroundings for inspiration, and the importance of strong women for science...

Pod of the Week Philly

Pod of the Week Philly

This week we are excited to introduce the Philadelphia 500WS Pod. Led by Tanya and Lexi, their pod is laying the ground work for a  strong support group, and have started to organize events focused on promoting STEM education. They also will be using the March for Science to grow their already large network. Read on to learn about the Philly Pod!
