Helpful resources for 2017

Helpful resources for 2017

One of the goals of 500 Women Scientists is to empower women to grow to their full potential in science. Mentoring and professional development trainings offer a great avenue to achieve this goal. As a start to 2017 we put together a list of resources that may be of interest for those of you searching for mentoring, professional or other networks.

The Women Behind 500 Women

It has now been a month since the first texts and emails and the initiation of the 500 Women Scientist. The month has flown by, full of signatures, press coverage , discussion, new connections and many exciting directions to take the movement. Before we get too far along we wanted to stop and introduce our lead organizers, Kelly Ramirez and Jane Zelikova.

Take Action Thursday

Our first Take Action Thursday was a success! here are your actions for this week:

  • Do you know of a family member who is a gift procrastinator? Ask them to donate to an organization or candidate that you support! Send them the link, make it easy! e.g. Renew your ACLU membership.

  • Communicate with elected officials by calling and writing YOUR district/state office and by blogging or writing an op-ed that will set off their google alert. I know calling can be uncomfortable, but it is quick - I challenge you to try it!

  • Keep up the heat on climate change action! Write or call a denier in your state or district. Be sure to say you are a constituent. Wall-of-us summarizes the deniers in this link. E.g. Cory Gardner District phone (719) 543-1324

  • Investigate Russia’s influence on our election process! Call your Senator or Representative. If you have one on the Senate and House Intelligence Committee, call them every day!! Ask your office to speak out by publicly calling for an investigation.

Take Action Thursday

Last week, our nation’s committee on Science, Space, and Technology tweeted a Breitbart Fake News article “Global Temperatures Plunge. Icy Silence from Climate Alarmists”.

For our first Take Action Thursday, we have put together a few suggestions below that will take you 5 min or less.

  • Contact the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology:

Breitbart News is a destructive fake news source - they are fueled by ads! Continue the pressure

  • Send Kellogg's a Thank You

    • 1-800-962-1413; Kellogg's Consumer Affairs P.O. Box CAMB, Battle Creek, MI 49016

    • Buy Kellogg products and donate to a food bank!

  • Alert other companies about their ads on Breitbart:
    • Go to Breitbart (dot) com. [I know, ugh, but keep going.] 2.) Find a Google AdSense ad. It will have a teal triangle and an X in its upper righthand corner. 3.) Click on the triangle. 4.) Click "Ad choices." 5.) On the Google page that loads, click "learn more" in the text toward the bottom. 6.) A page loads, Scroll down and click to "Leave feedback on the website you just saw." 7.) You are given a choice between "the website" and "the ads." Choose "the website." 8.) Check the box saying that the website (Breitbart) promotes racial intolerance/gender inequality. If you'd like, add a comment.  9.) Click submit!

Example Text:“Dear XXX, I have been outraged/offended/etc by fake news published on Breitbart News. I was very encouraged to see Kellogg foods remove ads from their site. When I checked the fake news site recently, I noticed an ad from your company. I am an owner/user of your product and was very upset to see your ad. I urge you to be more judicious in the content your ad money supports.
